Under this visa option, international students can visit Australia to participate in a course of study or partake in workplace-based training activities. These are temporary visas with a limited time frame.

Student visa (subclass 500)

Student visa (subclass 500) is a temporary visa for international students who want to participate in any academic course in Australia. This visa lasts for the duration of their study program, which is usually up to 5 years.

Key eligibility criteria:

  You must be enrolled in a full-time course registered on CRICOS in Australia

  You must be age 6 or older to apply for this visa

  You must have made welfare arrangements if you are under 18 years old

  You must be a genuine temporary entrant with an intention of returning back to your country after your study

  You must meet health and character requirements

  You must hold an eligible substantive visa if in Australia

Extra documents you need to present while applying for a Student visa:

  Evidence of enrolment

  Personal statement addressing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement

  All prior academic or work experience documents

  IELTS records

  Evidence of financial stability (enough for the cost of your living, study courses, and travel expenses)

 Adequate health insurance coverage by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

FAQ’s

You can only stay as per your course length. Primary school children of Years 1-4 can stay only up to a maximum period of 3 years. If your student visa expires before your graduation, you might be eligible for a Visitor visa (subclass 600). You can opt for other visas like Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) or Skilled Recognition Graduate visa (subclass 476) after your graduation.

You can include your spouse/partner and your or your partner’s dependent child who has not turned 18 years old yet. The family members must meet all the health and character requirements. 

You must hold an eligible substantive visa to apply for this visa while in Australia.

You can apply for a Special Purpose visa, or a Dependent Diplomatic (temporary) visa within 28 days of holding a Student visa or within 28 days of being notified by the Tribunal that your cancellation date has been set aside.

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you wish for the initial 5 years. After that, you need to hold a Resident Return visa (RRV) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.

You would not require a visa to enter Australia if you apply for an Australian passport.

Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)

Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) is a temporary visa for those who would like to visit Australia to support and care for a Student visa holder below the age of 18, or anyone older due to exceptional circumstances.

Key eligibility criteria:

  You must  be the visa holder’s parent, custodian, or relative who is 21 years or older

  You must have enough money to support yourself and the student during your stay

  You must be able to provide accommodation, welfare and other support

  You must be a genuine temporary entrant

  You must meet health and character requirements

FAQ’s

You cannot work while under Student Guardian visa.

However, you can take an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) for less than 20 hours per week, or any other study or training for less than 3 months

 

 

You can include any member of your family unit, excluding children below the age of 6. Children 6 years old or above must apply for their own student visa.

Beyond the cost for the main applicant, there is an additional charge for each family member who applies for the visa.

 

You have to pay for their health checks, police certificates, biometrics and an assurance of support bond too.

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you wish, but only with the Student visa holder. 

If you wish to travel outside Australia without the Student visa holder, you must make alternative welfare arrangements.

Training visa (subclass 407)

Training visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa that allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills in the field of your study or job, or in a professional development training program in Australia. 

Key eligibility criteria:

  You must be sponsored, and your sponsor must be approved as a temporary activities sponsor

  Your sponsor must nominate you to participate in any occupational training

  You must be 18 years or older

  You must be able to financially support yourself and your accompanying family member

  You must be a genuine temporary entrant

 You must meet health and character requirements

 

AUD 315
