Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) is a temporary visa for recently graduated international students from universities of Australia who would like to live, study and work here in Australia.

Under this visa, you can choose from two streams: Graduate Work Stream & Post-Study Work Stream

Key eligibility criteria:

  You must be under age 50

  You must hold an eligible visa at present

  You must have held a student visa in the last 6 months

  You must have a recent qualification in the CRICOS-registered courses

  You must nominate a single stream only (one cannot change the stream after they apply for this visa)

  You must demonstrate decent English language ability, either through holding certain countries’ passports or undertaking English ability tests

FAQ’s

Graduate Work Stream:
You cannot stay more than your specified tenure, that is 18 months for all applicants, and 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders. This visa is granted with multiple entries. You can enter and leave Australia as much as you want until the specified tenure.


Post-Study Work Stream (PSWS):
You cannot stay more than your specified tenure, that is 2 to 4 years for all applicants and 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders.

  • Bachelor degree (including honors): 2 years
  • Masters: 2 years
  • Masters by research: 3 years
  • Doctoral degree: 4 years
  • Hong Kong passport holders (successfully completed Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral degree): 5 years

This visa is non-extendable in nature. Once the tenure ends, you need to apply for other types of skilled work visas. Current Temporary Graduate visa holders from Hong Kong are eligible for an extension of 5 years in addition to the time they have already been in Australia, and will also have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.

You can bring your immediate family members along with you as subsequent entrants through this visa. These family members must apply for the visa and must meet the health and character requirements.

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you wish for the initial 5 years. After that, you need to hold a Resident Return visa (RRV) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.

You would not require a visa to enter Australia if you apply for an Australian passport.

Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

Key eligibility criteria:

For Point-tested Stream:

  You must be invited to apply

  You must be under 45 to invite

  Your occupation must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations

  You don’t need a sponsor or nominator

For New Zealand Stream

  You must hold a New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa

  You must have lived in Australia, at least, for the last 5 years, i.e. you must have started living here on or before 19 February, 2016

  Your taxable income must be at least the minimum income threshold of AUD 53,900, unless any case of exemptions

    ° If you have applied for this visa on or after 1 July, 2021, you must have met the minimum income threshold for at least 3 completed financial years in the last 5 years of your application date. One of these years must be the recent completed financial year.

    ° If you have applied for this visa before 1 July, 2021, you must have met the minimum income threshold for each 4 completed financial years prior to your application date.

There is no requirement of points for the New Zealand Stream

This is a permanent visa. You can stay in Australia indefinitely and become a permanent resident on the day you are granted a visa.

You can travel in and out of Australia as many times as you want for 5 years from the date you are granted a visa. After 5 years, you will need a Resident Return Visa (subclass 155 or 157) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) is a permanent visa for the nominated skilled workers who would like to live and work in Australia as permanent residents. You must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency for this visa.

Key eligibility criteria:

  You must be nominated and invited to apply for this visa

  You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled list

  You must have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation

  You must be below the age of 45 before you are invited to apply

 You must be able to score 65 points or above
